Appearance Adult house flies grow 8-12 mm long. Their thorax is gray or sometimes black with four dark lines on their back. Females are slightly larger than males. House flies are covered with tiny hairs that serve as taste organs. Their eyes are extremely complex; they have thousands of lenses that allow them a field of vision. Habitat House flies feed on both solid and liquid substances and material. Because of their large intake on food, they deposit feces all the time which is why they are a dangerous carrier of pathogens. They are capable of carrying over 100 pathogens including those that cause salmonella, anthrax, tuberculosis, and typhoid. They are only active in the day and rest at night in the corners of rooms, ceilings and barns. Entry and Damage Multiple adult house flies are a common sign of infestation and it's important to make sure you cover all trash cans and food so flies are unable to deposit their eggs and feed. If you do encounter an infestation it must be cleaned up immediately to avoid any exposure to disease. Critter Control of Seattle is trained in identifying spots that house flies can breed and feed off of and can provide information to avoid future infestations.
