Douglas squirrels, sometimes known as the chickaree or pine squirrel, are destructive animals in the Seattle area. Mating occurs as early as February and after 4 weeks of a gestation period and 8 short weeks of life, the young are weaned and independent.

Appearance

Adult Douglas squirrels grow to be about 33 cm in length and can weigh up to 300 grams. Appearance may vary according to the season. During the summer they are a grayish, almost green-brown on their backs, with a pale orange chest and belly and brown legs and feet. In the winter their coat is browner with a grayer underbelly and chest. Alike other squirrels, Douglas squirrels have a white ring around the eye.

Habitat

Douglas squirrels are territorial areas. In the winter a single squirrel will occupy a territory of about 10,000 square meters. During breeding season a mated pair will reside in 1 territory together. Douglas squirrels will sleep in ball-shaped nests in trees, during the winter the squirrels will nest in holes within trees.

Entry

Are squirrels known to enter homes or yards?
Douglas squirrels are commonly found in yards and parks. When an opportunity is found, Douglas squirrels will enter homes by branches that overhang eaves. Entry may be made while seeking a warm nesting area or a food source.

Damage

Do squirrels harm people or property?
Douglas squirrels have the ability to create significant structural damages to homes. Chewing wires, pulling insulation, and creating holes in siding can be dangerous and unsightly damages. Nests in the attic or walls may create terrible odors and difficult stains that will require professional attention.

Control and Safety

Keeping Douglas squirrels off personal property is challenging since the rodents can simply burrow underneath or climb over most fences, though electrified fencing can be effective. Douglas squirrels can be kept from entering attics by sealing all possible external entrances and pruning tree limbs that hang over roofs.
