Black Carpet Beetle

Appearance

Black Carpet Beetles can measure 2.8-5 mm in length. Their heads are black and concealed from above. Their wings, also called elytra, are brownish black.

Habitat

Black carpet beetles are most commonly found in the northeastern United States. They feed on silk, feathers, hair, wool and leather. They will sometimes feed on dried meat and plants. Black carpet beetles have been known to infest common kitchen areas and closet and storage areas.

Entry and Damage

Black carpet beetles can enter the home through windows and doors, but can also enter your home through flowers and plants. They feed in dark and undisturbed areas and because of this, it's often difficult to identify an infestation until it's widespread. It's important to seal off any openings in your home and check all plants and flowers that you bring inside.
