Thatching Ants


Thatching ants are larger ants around 4-8 mm in length. They are stocky ants with large heads and a powerful jaw. Most are bi-colored, red and black, but some species are all black. Thatching ants get their name from the habitat of creating large mounts which appear to be "thatched" as they have material layered on top like an European thatched roof. They can be found in grasslands, prairies, sagebrush, coastal and island dunes.

Thatching ants have been known to damage the buds of apple, pear and plum plants in the spring. They use these materials to build their nests usually found in large mounds.
