Appearance Pavement ants grow to be between 2.5 - 4 mm long, and may range in color from brown to black. They are equipped with a stinger in their abdominal segment, though it is rare that they attack humans. The reproductive pavement ants have a slightly different appearance and are about twice the size of a norml worker ant and have wings. Colonies are most commonly found under side-walks, building slabs, large rocks, home foundations, and large flower pots. Habitat Entry and Damage Although pavement ants are found under concrete slabs or sidewalks, it is not uncommon to find them inside your home as well. Colonies of pavement ants taking up residence under your foundation will find any and all cracks and make their way inside. Pavement ants do not cause structural damage but do become quite the nuisance. Most of the time they enter your home in search of their next snack. These ants are equipped to eat just about anything, and will eat every piece of food that is within their grasp. Prevention When it comes to pavement ants, there are a couple different preventative measures that can be taken. You should have any foundation gaps or cracks filled, be sure to store any sweet foods in a sealed container, any fruits or veggies are not stored on the counter, keeping windows and doors sealed is also a good preventative measure.
