Appearance

Moisture Ants are 4 to 4.5 mm long and yellow in color. When crushed, they produce a lemon scent that is often described as citronella. Moisture Ants get their name from their habitat of nesting in high-moisture areas. These ants are common from the Pacific Northwest to New England. Their range extends southward to Florida and Mexico. Outdoors they often nest under rocks or logs. They sometimes nest above the ground in rotting logs.

Entry and Damage

When moisture ants move indoors, they often nest in wood that is moisture damaged. They sometimes will nest in walls when there is a plumbing leak as well. Although not a serious structural pest, it can speed up the deterioration process of wood as moisture ants tunnel into the wood and expand its colony.

Prevention

It's important to keep moisture to a minimum inside the home and if you do encounter any plumbing issues, fix the problem immediately to avoid moisture ants creating their nest. Call a Critter Control of Seattle expert today for more information on moisture ant control! 206.317.5048
