Carpenter Ants

Appearance

Carpenter Ants are known to be the largest ants in the United States. Carpenter Ants range from 3.5-14 mm long. A majority are black in color, but some species have been known to have a reddish or yellowish color. They also have noticeable waists, clubbed or bent antennas and long legs.

Habitat

Carpenter Ants reside both outdoors and indoors in moist, decaying, or hollow wood. They cut "galleries" into the wood grain to provide passageways for movement from section to section of the nest. They chew out these "galleries" with their mandibles. They do not consume the wood, unlike termites. They remove wood and deposit the debris outside of their nests in piles.

Entry and Damage

You can usually find carpenter ants inside the home forging for food and debris. The debris is wood from tunneling to create their nests. You may also notice a rustling sound sometimes heard from the ants as they move around in the home's wood. It's important to remove any wood lying around the house. If you have a firewood pile, store it away from your home, elevated off the ground.
